Canada Work Permit

A Canada work permit allows foreign nationals to work temporarily in Canada. To obtain a work permit, you must have a job offer from a Canadian employer and meet certain eligibility requirements.

The eligibility requirements for a work permit vary depending on the type of work permit you are applying for. Some common types of work permits include:

  • Temporary foreign worker program: This program is for foreign nationals who have a job offer from a Canadian employer and will be working in Canada for a limited time.
  • International Mobility Program: This program is for foreign nationals who are coming to Canada for work purposes that are not covered by the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, such as intra-company transfers, international agreements, and research.
  • Working Holiday Visa: This program allows young people from certain countries to work and travel in Canada for up to 2 years.
  • To apply for a work permit, you will need to complete an application form and provide supporting documents, such as your job offer letter and proof of qualifications. You may also be required to undergo a medical exam and obtain a police certificate.

    Once you have submitted your application, the processing time can vary depending on the type of work permit and the location where you are applying from. In general, it is recommended to apply as early as possible to allow for sufficient processing time.

    DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO APPLY FOR A CANADA WORK PERMIT VISA

    A valid passport with a validity of more than 6 months from the planned date of arrival in Canada.

  • Two recent passport-sized photographs
  • Educational qualification certificates
  • Proof of professional qualifications, including work experience
  • Proof of having adequate financial resources to cover their expenses during their stay in Canada
  • Medical examinations is required to be done from registered hospitals.
  • Application fee
  • Applicants should also be able to convince immigration officials that they would return to their home country after the end of their employment.
  • GENERAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Give proof to an officer that you will move out of Canada on the expiry of your Work Permit
  • Have documents showing that you have enough funds to support yourself and your family during your stay in Canada
  • Have no record of any criminal activity and submit a police clearance certificate as proof
  • Are not a danger to Canada’s security
  • Must have good health and take a medical exam if required
  • Have no plans to work for an employer listed as ineligible by the government because they failed to comply with certain conditions
  • LMIA

    A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that an employer in Canada may need before hiring a foreign worker. A positive LMIA will show that there is a need for a foreign worker to fill the job position and that no Canadian worker is available to do the job.

    Employers can get the LMIA application processed according to their needs, either to support the foreign worker’s application for permanent residence or to hire them as a temporary foreign worker, or both.

    To receive a positive LMIA, the employer must meet the minimum requirements set out by the Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).     Types of Canada Work Permit Visa

    Employer-specific work permit

    An open work permit is a type of Canada work permit that allows you to work for any employer in Canada, except for those who are listed as ineligible by the government. With an open work permit, you are not tied to a specific employer or job, and you can switch employers or jobs without needing to obtain a new work permit.

    There are several types of open work permits available, including:

  • Spousal Open Work Permit: This type of work permit is available to the spouse or common-law partner of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit: This type of work permit is available to international students who have graduated from a Canadian educational institution.
  • Bridging Open Work Permit: This type of work permit is available to individuals who are already in Canada on a temporary resident status, and have applied for permanent residence, but are waiting for their application to be processed.
  • International Experience Canada (IEC) Work Permit: This type of work permit is available to young adults from certain countries who wish to work and travel in Canada for up to 2 years.

  • To apply for an open work permit, you will need to provide the following documents:

  • A valid passport or travel document
  • Proof of your eligibility for the specific type of open work permit you are applying for
  • Proof of your qualifications and experience
  • A police certificate to demonstrate that you do not pose a risk to public health or security in Canada
  • Proof that you will leave Canada when your work permit expires
  • Any other supporting documents required by the immigration officer processing your application
  • You will also need to pay a processing fee and submit your application
